Attack!  Try screaming it!  ATTACK!  Feels good, doesn’t it?  If the title doesn’t grab you, then there’s no point in reading any further… but I was immediately hooked.  After all, if I had ever made a game, this would have been its name.  And it ends with an exclamation point, so you KNOW it’s going be exciting!  Oh well…

If you ask what it’s about, I’ll tell you social networking.  Clearly that is a lie.  And that would be the appropriate response to such a question.  But seriously, it’s a board game.  It’s not as ridiculously random as Risk®, but not as anally retentive as Axis and Allies®.  The game fits within the time frame of WWII, but that’s about it.  No scenarios, no specific nations, no Axis or Allies.  It’s just unnamed nations, each representing a different style of government.  Bottom line, it’s all about world conquest.  And that’s why I like it.  Here’s what comes in the box:

The board is huge, and if you add the expansion, it’s twice as big.

Woah!  Just kidding.  While it is an accurate replication of the full game board, the actual board may be slightly smaller.  But the real one is something like 3×5 feet!  Please note, that does include the expansion.  The board included in Attack! is just the Western Hemisphere.  As far as space goes, the kitchen table simply won’t suffice.  You’ll need to play this one on your driveway.  Don’t have a driveway?  Buy a house!  You’ll thank me after your first game.

I’m not going to go into any significant detail, but you should know that the gameplay consists of tiny plastic planes, tanks, artillery, and army guys combined with a set of custom dice used to determine the outcome of battles.  Feel free to substitute real tanks, planes, artillery, and army guys for a more authentic experience.

Some don’t care for the die mechanic, but I think it’s very appropriate.  The size of your force gives you an edge, but if there’s one thing you should have learned by now it’s that battles never proceed like the plans said they would.  A certain aircraft carrier and “mission accomplished” banner come to mind.  Point being, chance is always a factor, but it doesn’t have to be to the point of complete dumb luck.

The expansion to Attack!, called Attack! Expansion… go figure… offers, literally, the other half of the world along with a fleet of real ships for every empire navy.

Sadly, the game is out of print.  It appeared as though the two sets were going to be combined into a “Deluxe” package to be released in the fall of 2008 for $49.99, but Eagle Games was bought out in early 2008 by FRED Distribution and there has been no sign of it whatsoever on the FRED website featuring upcoming products.  There have been other sites that list the deluxe package as releasing in early 2009, but the information appears to be out of date.   I don’t have any reason to assume the project is dead, but it may have moved from an imminent release to the slightly more vague, “sometime in the future.”  That said, several retail outlets are still selling the original game and if you search hard enough, you may still be able to find a copy of the expansion.
